Stump Grinding in Limerick

Stumps ground out below ground level so you can replant, re-turf or pave. No digging, no trip hazards.

Professional stump grinding you can trust

When a tree is cut down, the stump left behind can take many years to rot away. In the meantime it's a trip hazard, gets in the way of mowing and landscaping, and some species keep sending up new shoots from the roots. Stump grinding is the quickest, least disruptive way to get rid of it.

A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump away below ground level, leaving a hole filled with wood chippings rather than a crater. Limerick Tree Care grinds stumps of all sizes across Limerick and surrounding counties, either straight after a tree removal or for old stumps that have been sitting in the garden for years.

Problems we solve

Why customers remove tree stumps

  • Trip hazards

Low stumps hidden in long grass are easy to fall over, especially for children and older relatives.

  • Making space

Stumps get in the way of new lawns, patios, driveways, sheds and extensions.

  • Unwanted regrowth

Some trees, such as sycamore, willow and many conifers grown as hedges, can sprout new shoots from the stump or roots.

  • Pests and fungi

Decaying stumps can attract insects and fungi, including honey fungus, which can spread to other plants in the garden.

How it works

How stump grinding works

  1. Step 1: Check access

Tell us the narrowest point on the way to the stump, such as a side gate. Many grinders fit through a standard garden gate.

  2. Step 2: Check for services

We ask about underground pipes, cables and drains near the stump before we start grinding.

  3. Step 3: Grind below ground

The stump and main surface roots are ground out below ground level, to the depth agreed for what you plan to do next.

  4. Step 4: Finish the area

The hole is backfilled with the chippings or the chippings are removed so you can add topsoil, as you prefer.

Stump grinding safety

Stump grinders throw out wood chips and soil at speed, so we screen off the work area where needed and keep people and pets well back. Our operators wear full protective equipment.

Before grinding we always ask about underground services. If you know or suspect there is a gas pipe, water main, drain or cable near the stump, please tell us when you book.

FAQs

Stump Grinding questions

How deep do you grind tree stumps?

Deep enough for what you want to do next. Re-turfing needs less depth than replanting a tree or building over the area. We'll agree the depth with you when we quote.

What happens to the roots?

Grinding removes the stump and the main surface roots around it. The deeper roots are left in the ground to break down naturally, which is normal and won't stop you replanting nearby.

Can you get a stump grinder into my back garden?

Usually, yes. Many stump grinders are compact enough to pass through a standard garden gate. Let us know about steps, slopes or narrow side passages when you ask for a quote.

What do I do with the wood chippings?

They can be used as mulch on flower beds or left to backfill the hole. If you'd rather have them taken away, just let us know.

Can you grind a stump left by someone else?

Yes. We regularly grind out old stumps, whoever cut the tree down.
